Week 1 • Module 1

Accessible Start and AI Readiness

Set up a safe, accessible learning workflow and choose a useful goal.

Lesson 1.1 — Welcome, choice and access

Learning should adapt to people. Choose the formats, pace, input methods and support that help you participate with the least unnecessary effort.

Make four choices

  1. Choose text, audio, video or a combination.
  2. Choose a realistic weekly study time.
  3. Choose how you will record evidence: typed, voice, visual or supported demonstration.
  4. Choose how you will pause and return after an interruption.

Practice

Create a one-page access plan: “I learn best when…”, “I may need…”, “I will record evidence by…”, and “If I fall behind, I will restart with…”.

Lesson 1.2 — Your AI starting point
25 minutesEvidence: baseline score

Confidence is not the same as competence. A baseline shows what you know now, what you still need and what would make the course useful.

Lesson 1.3 — Accounts, files and privacy basics

Keep learning evidence organised and separate from confidential work. Use meaningful filenames, dates and version labels.

Never include in a public AI prompt: passwords, identity numbers, banking details, private health information, confidential client records, restricted organisational documents or another person’s personal data without proper authority and safeguards.

Practice

Create one course folder with subfolders named “Prompts”, “Outputs”, “Checks” and “Final evidence”. Save a blank document using the filename pattern.

Lesson 1.4 — Choose a real-world challenge
30 minutesEvidence: challenge statement

A good learning challenge is useful, bounded, lower risk and easy to test. Avoid problems that require AI to make final decisions about people.

Challenge statement

“I want to improve [task] for [user] because [current barrier or delay]. AI may assist by [bounded role]. A person will remain responsible for [review or decision].”

Practice

Write your challenge statement. Examples: improve meeting follow-up, simplify a public information page, structure a research briefing or create a reusable email workflow.

Week 2 • Module 2

AI Foundations Without the Jargon

Understand what generative AI can and cannot do and choose appropriate uses.

Lesson 2.1 — What AI is—and is not

Artificial intelligence is a broad term for systems that perform tasks associated with human intelligence. Machine learning finds patterns from data. Generative AI creates new content from learned patterns.

Automation follows rules; AI may infer, predict or generate. Many real systems combine both.

Practice

Classify each as ordinary software, rule-based automation or AI: calculator, automatic invoice reminder, chatbot drafting an answer, spreadsheet total and image generator. Explain one answer.

Lesson 2.2 — How generative AI produces answers

Generative AI predicts likely content from its training and the current conversation. It can create fluent answers without independently knowing whether they are true.

Why errors happen

  • The prompt lacks context.
  • Training data is incomplete or biased.
  • The tool predicts a plausible but unsupported detail.
  • The information changed after training.
  • The task requires specialist judgement.

Practice

Ask an AI tool for three facts about a topic you know well. Mark each as correct, incomplete, uncertain or incorrect. Record what made the answer sound believable.

Lesson 2.3 — Strengths, limits and human judgement

AI is useful for drafting, reorganising, comparing and generating options. People remain responsible for purpose, values, context, lived experience, verification and consequential decisions.

Assist–Review–Avoid

  • Assist: low-risk, reversible and easy to check.
  • Review: meaningful consequences require named human oversight.
  • Avoid: do not delegate final high-impact decisions or use data without authority.

Practice

Classify three tasks from your work or life. State why each belongs in Assist, Review or Avoid.

Lesson 2.4 — Your first useful AI task
40 minutesEvidence: before-and-after output

Use AI on a task whose quality you can judge. Keep the original, the prompt, the AI output and your final human-edited version.

Practice

Choose a short public text, agenda or task list. Ask AI to improve its structure. Check every claim, add missing context, improve accessibility and record your changes.

Week 3 • Module 3

Prompting, Conversation and Verification

Give clear instructions, refine results and verify important claims.

Lesson 3.1 — The CLEAR prompt pattern

CLEAR stands for Context, Limits, Examples or evidence, Audience and accessibility, and Result format.

Practice

Start with “Write an email about our event.” Then rewrite it using CLEAR. Compare accuracy, usefulness, tone and accessibility.

Lesson 3.2 — Working in stages
35 minutesEvidence: conversation plan

Complex tasks are easier to control when divided into stages. A useful sequence is: clarify, outline, draft, check, revise and format.

Example

  1. Ask the AI to list missing information.
  2. Approve an outline.
  3. Draft one section at a time.
  4. Check claims against sources.
  5. Request an accessible final format.

Practice

Plan a three-stage conversation for your real-world challenge. Add a human review point after every stage.

Lesson 3.3 — Accessible and inclusive prompting
35 minutesEvidence: accessible rewrite

Do not ask only for “accessible content”. State the needed features: plain language, meaningful headings, short paragraphs, descriptive links, alt text, captions, non-colour indicators and keyboard-friendly structure.

Practice

Choose a dense paragraph. Ask AI to rewrite it for a specific audience at an accessible reading level without removing essential meaning. Check the result yourself.

Lesson 3.4 — Fact-checking and source discipline
45 minutesEvidence: verification record

Use the Claim–Evidence–Confidence method. List each important claim, find an authoritative source, record whether the evidence supports it and state your confidence.

Never treat a citation as real only because the AI produced a title, author or link. Open and verify the source. For laws, standards and official statistics, prefer primary sources and check the date.

Practice

Select three claims from an AI answer. Create columns for Claim, Source, Date checked, Evidence, Confidence and Action. Correct or remove unsupported claims.

Week 4 • Module 4

Productivity, Research and Everyday Work

Reduce repetitive work while protecting accuracy and confidentiality.

Lesson 4.1 — Email, agendas and meeting notes
35 minutesEvidence: communication sample

AI can turn approved notes into a draft agenda, email or action list. Remove confidential details before prompting and check recipients, names, dates, tone, commitments and attachments.

Practice

Create an accessible email with a clear subject, purpose, short paragraphs, action, deadline and contact route. Add an action list with owner and due date.

Lesson 4.2 — Research and synthesis
45 minutesEvidence: briefing note

Start with a focused question and reliable sources. Ask AI to organise information, not to manufacture evidence. Keep direct facts, interpretation and recommendation separate.

Practice

Create a one-page briefing using two authoritative sources. Include meaningful links and the date each source was checked.

Lesson 4.3 — Documents and reports

Readable reports help people decide and act. Use a clear title, executive takeaway, headings, evidence, limitations, recommendations, owners and next steps.

Practice

Turn your briefing into a decision note containing: decision needed, evidence, options, recommendation, risk, accessibility consideration and next action.

Lesson 4.4 — Personal productivity system
40 minutesEvidence: workflow card

A useful workflow is repeatable, understandable and safe. Document the trigger, information needed, AI assistance, human review, final action and recovery route.

Practice

Create a before-and-after workflow card for your real-world challenge. Estimate time or effort before and after, record the safeguard and identify one result to measure.

Complete all 16 lessons before treating the assessment as your final result.
